NOTUS

LEADING CONTEMPORARY CHORAL ENSEMBLE

Country: USA
Conductor: Dominick DiOrio
Voicing: SATB

Featuring 30 students from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, NOTUS is one of the USA’s most unique collegiate vocal ensembles, with a singular commitment to championing living composers through the commissioning, programming, and recording of new works. Directed by conductor-composer Dominick DiOrio, NOTUS was originally founded in 1980 as the Indiana University Contemporary Vocal Ensemble. The choir’s new name was inspired by Notos, the Greek god of the south wind.

This ensemble has performed across the United States, from regional and national ACDA conferences to Carnegie Hall. In September of 2018, NOTUS released their first commercial album on the Innova label, NOTUS: Of Radiance and Refraction, which includes five world premiere recordings by IU faculty composers.

Over the course of its history, NOTUS has delivered premiere or second performances of more than 150 new works in the choral repertoire. The choir also regularly programmes a rich and eclectic array of leading contemporary composers. In 2013, the ensemble was honoured to collaborate with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw and guest conductor and former King’s Singer Simon Carrington.

“The sound of the ensemble is mature and assured, even as it navigates a thorny array of styles, characters, and vocal demands.” – David Rents, Choral Journal album review 2018.

NOTUS is looking forward to sharing an invigorating and positive musical experience at WSCM2020. It will showcase the rich treasure of America's living composers and the contributions they make to our vibrant and diverse musical ecosystem.
